about

Unreleased Goa Records celebrates Christmas with the 25th full-length release, ‘Peyote People’, the eponymous album from the early project of Swedish act ‘Procs’. Mikael Stegman first encountered Goa Trance thanks to his brother, who was heading for parties around Stockholm and played for him the first two volumes of ‘Distance To Goa’ compilation series and Hallucinogen’s 'Twisted’ in the winter of 1995/96. Mikael delved into this music and was impressed by the sound produced by X-Dream, Juno Reactor, Koxbox, Slinky Wizard, and major acts from Israel. He was also interested in experimental techno projects such as Lucky People Center and Acid-styled music. With his background as a piano player, Mikael attempted to mimic what he heard on a basic setup he had at the time. A number of tracks were born with this process, that reflected the feelings he wanted to communicate and helped him develop his own interpretation of Goa Trance.

‘Peyote People’ was actually a name he gave to one of these early experiments. Mikael used to frequent Saturn Return/Milky Way record store in Stockholm. The shop owner got hold of Mikael's tracks and sent some as a demo to Shpastic Elastic Records. The info was written in such a way, that it was not easy to distinguish the artist name from the track names. The label contacted Mikael about his tracks, offering him two contracts, one for ‘Procs’ and one for ‘Peyote People’. Two tracks were eventually released under these aliases on the ‘Scrambled Heads’ compilation in 2001. In the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mikael dug around his studio and found the remaining tracks produced in that early period. He decided to publish them today under the ‘Peyote People’ moniker, so as to distinguish these works from his standard Procs outlet.

This unique album includes 16 previously unreleased tracks produced in 1995/96, with the exception of ‘Peyote People’ and ‘Snow’, completed in 1997/98. The collaboration with Spiralix took place in 2000, at a time when Mikael and Mathias were studying the same sound engineer program. The equipment used included a MS-DOS 286 PC, the Akai S2000 Sampler (32 MB RAM + FX-Board), the Roland JP8000 keyboard, the Roland Sound Canvas SC 50 Midi Synthesizer Module and the Zoom Studio 1204 Effects Unit. Almost everything was recorded straight through a SoundBlaster 16 audio card. It is worth mentioning that these tracks were never played or performed live at the time, as Mikael then was focused mainly in creating and composing. He was inspired mostly by the nature surrounding his residence, and was driven by his increasing fascination with Goa Trance. It was not until 2000 that he played a set that featured his late 90's and early 2000's material that can be found amongst some Procs productions throughout the years.
