about

Unreleased Goa Records proudly presents "Gnosis", the amazing Goa Trance album of New Zealand artist V A S T. Bernie Eller started to produce electronic music in 1992, heavily influenced by Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Kitaro, William Orbit, New Order, as well as the classical masters Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and almost every New Wave synth-pop band and artist of the 80’s. It was still 1992 when he completed his first four trance tracks and performed them live on the floor. Following the footsteps of Man With No Name, Etnica, Hallucinogen, Astral Projection and legendary labels Flying Rhino, TIP, Behind The Eye, Dragonfly, his style progressively evolved to Goa Trance in 1995. Bernie did not follow any strict formula or try to replicate someone else's style, but rather picked ideas from here and there and attempted to stitch them all together. On almost every track he made he used a 'B Groove' swing setting in Logic software, to get a slight shuffle feeling, reminiscent of his early days working with Hip Hop and Rap. He also added many samples from sci-fi movies, to set the tone and get people thinking. These combined ingredients make Bernie's tracks quite unique.

Bernie named his Goa Trance project "V A S T" after an epiphany during micro dosing on a Monday in 1996. At the time, Mondays were typically reserved for mixing and mastering tracks that he had worked on during the week. Inbetween mixing and brainstorming, he would sometimes stop and wonder about the big questions on life and the universe. When visualising the scale of the universe and our place in it, the feeling was that it was... vast. He picked this word for his project as a humbling reminder of cosmic scale. The ten tracks featured on this album were produced between 1993 and 1996, a time-period when Bernie's style evolved, as his programming abilities were improving and his influences were changing. His work at a music store in Auckland City provided a great opportunity to him, to obtain many great analog keyboards and drum machines before prices went sky high. The following equipment was used for the album:

Roland: Juno 2 + PG-300, Juno 106, Juno 60, Jupiter 4, Jupiter 6, Jupiter 8, SH101, SH1, MKS-7, SVC-330, TB-303, CR-78, TR-808, TR-909, DR-660. JV-2080

Korg: MS-20, Monopoly, DV-800 Maxi-Korg, 700s. 05-RW. Minipops 700

Yamaha: TX81Z, CS-30A, DX-100

Sequential: Six Track, Pro One, Drum Traks

Moog: Memorymoog Plus

Miscellaneous: Casio FZ10M Sampler, Akai S01 Sampler, OSc Oscar, Kenton Pro 2000 CV Midi converter. Home built Analog Sequencer, Roland M240 Line Mixer, DOD 16 Channel Mixer. Atari 1024ST E-magic CLAB & Logic Audio. Emagic AMT-8 MIdii interface

Effects: Sovtek Small Stone Phaser, Ibanez Analog Delay, Roland SDE-330 Space Delay, BBE Sonic Maximiser. Boss-SE-50, Boss RPH-10 Phaser

Bernie's occupation at the music technology section of the shop allowed him also to connect with other producers interested in the same style of music. They often played at the same parties and shared ideas, hardware and music production tips with each other. Every track on "Gnosis" has been performed at live events at the time, mostly around Auckland, the largest one being an outdoor event of 3000-5000 people called "Hara". The tracks were eventually passed around on DAT to various international travelling DJ’s, such as DJ Jörg, who included them in their sets around the globe.

The name "Gnosis" has a special meaning for Bernie. During the 90’s, as a way to recover from his Catholic upbringing, he was reading about the early Christian sects and watching several documentaries on the subject. At some point, he came across the Gnostics, a quasi-mystical side of early Christianity. The gnostic teachings and philosophy seemed to him more fit with Eastern religious ideas and more inclusive / thought provoking compared to the Christian dogmas that prevailed. Bernie also knew the original Greek meaning of the word "gnosis" ("knowledge or insight"): we come to realize our true divine nature, which leads to the deliverance of the divine spark within humanity, beyond the constraints of earthly existence. This was a much older, pre-Christian idea, somehow in line with Bernie's personal evolution and change following his psychedelic experiences. The way of gaining knowledge or insight of something "other", outside ourselves and the average day-to-day existence. Take the red pill...

Bernie has also produced tracks under his trance side-project "Area 51", that will soon be published for the first time on Unreleased Goa Records.
