quantumbreakfast This is an absolutely amazing album. I had never even heard of this artist until UGR released The Future Memories. But decided to throw it in the basket on Bandcamp Friday and this might be the best random purchase ever. This album is filled with a variety of original compositions, drenched in oldskool melodies, acid lines, and melodramatic psychedelic vibes. Also thanks to UGR for having found a platform to keep releasing gems like this. Favorite track: Color Of Sound.

about

Unreleased Goa Records celebrates the New Year with ‘The Future Memories,’ a marvellous Goa Trance album by mysterious Dutch act Rephaze Project. Marinus Looijenga started making music in 1995, at the age of 13, mostly very experimental gabber and hardcore, although he always had a weak spot for trance. He transitioned to Goa Trance when he came across the best-selling album ‘Dancing Galaxy’ by Astral Projection (one of his all-time favorites), and delved into the works of California Sunshine, SFX, Oforia, Man With No Name, Electric Universe, Blue Planet Corporation, Human Blue and, at a later time, Antix, Ticon, and the Iboga crew. When producing Goa Trance, Marinus found out that there were certain ‘phases’ during which he felt attracted to a certain style or method of making music. As technology progressed, every time new ideas were involved in the process. This approach is aptly reflected in the name ‘Rephaze Project’.

In 2000, Marinus entered a local dance music contest called ‘Northern Dance Experience’, made it to the finals and eventually won the award. The first prize was a vinyl release with two of his tracks (the ‘Azur Blue / Evolutionary Diversity’ EP, pressed in 500 copies), and a live performance at ‘Freeze Festival’. In the years that followed Marinus had some more live appearances at local Goa Trance events. A recording of one of these performances circulated on the internet and caught the attention of Unreleased Goa Records.

This album contains the wonderful Goa Trance pieces that Marinus composed between 2000 and 2005. As the music is made over a rather long period of time, there are notable style differences between the tracks. What binds them together are the melodic lines along the psychedelic riffs, with a touch of melancholy encompassing them all. The tracks were produced using Buzz Tracker, and later Propellerheads connected through ReWire to Logic Audio with VST’s such as as FM7, FM8, and Absynth. Outboard equipment includes a Mackie VLZ 1604 mixing desk, some effects processors and compressors, an Event Echo Gina soundcard, and later a Yamaha DS2516.

The title ‘The Future Memories’ emphasizes the correlation of past and future. The music was made a long time ago, but it was never been released before in any form. The album artwork, designed by the artist himself, reflects the style of digital art he was drawn to at the time, old by today's standards and intentionally futuristic.

Exclusively available on Bandcamp is a previously unreleased remix of 'Enjoy Your Life'.

Unreleased Goa Records would like to thank Дејан Белић, whose valuable contribution made this release possible.
