about

Unreleased Goa Records proudly celebrates the return of a UK Goa Trance legend of the 90’s: Pascal Eloy, otherwise known as O.V.N.I., who released memorable tracks on the legendary French label POF Music. An admirer of electronic pioneers such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Sun Electric and Cluster, Pascal started to produce music in 1993. During that time, he enjoyed a wide range of dance music styles such as Techno, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass, as well as ambient and experimental acts, notably The Future Sound of London. These influences show on his first release (as "Cygnus Loop", with Matthew Buggins) in 1994, a techno-house EP on Snoek Records with a popular dub track on the B side (played at Dubmission in Leeds and described by the promoter as his favourite dub track ever). The same year, he began his journey into Goa Trance.

In 1995, Pascal successfully released a vinyl EP as "Prism" (with Grant Wilkinson) on Robs Records, a branch of Factory Records (known for signing and releasing Joy Division and New Order). Robs Records was named after Rob Gretton, the legendary manager of these seminal bands. The Prism single was rereleased with the addition of a remix by Farmakit (Francesco Farfa and Joy Kitikonti) by the label Air Trance Communication. In 1996, Pascal released on Filterless Records a single under the name "The Mobeus", with co-producer Martin Ayrton. Pascal appeared on several compilations as Prism, O.V.N.I. and The Mobeus. A Prism track appeared on the influencial "Feed Your Head" albums by Planet Dog Records, and The Mobeus appeared on "Sub-Mission: The Very Best of UK Underground" by Cameleon Records and on "DSM" by Mindspore Records. Pascal is inspired by old science-fiction films and series such as "Invaders", and liked the global appeal of the Unidentified Flying Objects phenomenon: he named his solo project "O.V.N.I." (the equivalent of "UFO" in several mainland European languages). Between 1996 and 1998, he published two popular vinyls on POF Music and several compilation tracks on Planet Dog, Javelin, Sub Terranean and Millenium Records. However, only a handful of people knew that Pascal had been particularly prolific during that period, producing many more Goa Trance tracks which remained unpublished until today.

Ten of these tracks have been ripped from the artist's DAT tapes and compiled to form "Pulse Wave", the first ever O.V.N.I. album. The title describes a square wave containing cycles (pulses) which are adjustable with the use of the pulse wave modulator, a synthesis method used in vintage synthesisers. The following gear was used for the production of the album:

2 x Sequencial Circuits Pro-One analogue synthesisers
Roland SH101 analogue synthesiser
Minisonic 2 analogue synthesiser
Korg MS 10 analogue synthesiser
Yamaha CS6 analogue synthesiser
Jen SX 1000 analogue synthesiser
Roland MPU 101 midi to CV interface
Emax 2 sampler and synthesiser
Korg DDD 1 drum machine
Boss DR660 drum machine
Mac Plus 1 computer
Cubase 1 sequencer
2 x ART effect units
Spirit Folio SI 14-channel mixing desk
Spirit Studio 24-channel mixing desk

It is worth mentioning that in imminent danger of a computer crash, these tracks were often named on-the-fly, when saving the sequence. Major sources of inspiration at the time were acts such as Astral Projection, Blue Planet Corporation, Cosmosis, and labels such as TIP, Transient, Blue Room, Boom, Flying Rhino.

Pascal has been performing live for many years, starting with an appearance at the legendary Hacienda club in Manchester, and then at Return to the Source, Mindscapes, Cabbage, Kundalini, Alien Resonance, Global Sunrise, Undertow, Glade Festival, Off The Tracks Festival, Bearded Theory Festival, Shamania Festival, The Lizard Festival, and Dimensions Festival in Paris. He has supported acts such as The Orb, System 7, and Eat Static. Pascal continues to produce electronic music of diverse styles and perform at various venues. More unpublished O.V.N.I. material will be released on Unreleased Goa Records in the coming years.
