about

Unreleased Goa Records is honored to release “Wonderland”, an enchanting Goa Trance journey written by German veteran Captain Unplugged between 1995 and 1999. Marc Kruska started making music at the age of 12 and taught himself drums and guitar. He programmed the first sequences with a Commodore C64. In the early 90’s he played in a locally known goth band called “The Guanavaana”. As an active scenester, by the mid-90’s he followed the trend of goths going to local trance and goa parties. Marc was also working at a record shop, where he had access to all kinds of releases available in Germany. He became increasingly interested in Goa Trance and bought every record by the golden-age labels TIP, Transient, Matsuri, Blue Room, Spirit Zone, Nephilim and others that very few remember today.

In 1995, Marc made a decision to produce Goa music under different monikers: “Kware”, “Athari”, “Zauberwald”, “Latenzfrei”, and “Captain Unplugged” (this name came up when someone misread his handwriting and Marc found the result fitting when read out loud). At that time, he lived together with other musicians in a shared flat. Among his flatmates was Frank Beckers (Space Safari, Export Audio, D-Nox & Beckers and others). Both Marc and Frank had their own equipment and put it together to create a home studio. They worked with Cubase 2 on an Atari ST. The first Captain Unplugged and Space Safari tracks were produced with this shared equipment:

Roland D-20 (its sounds plays a central role on these tracks)
2 x Novation Bass Station (one is used as a keyboard, the other as a 19")
Korg DDD1 Drum Machine
Alesis SR16 Drum Machine
Korg DW6000
Korg X5D
Prophet 2000 Sampler

Along with:
Alesis Quadraverb
ART Multiverb
Boss SE50
and guitar stompboxes such as overdrive, distortion, modulation. The “dynamics” remain untouched (no limiters, no compressors).

The nine Captain Unplugged tracks featured in “Wonderland” were influenced by many genres, especially electro and EBM that Marc found stylistically close to Goa Trance and the atmosphere of the parties at the time. Marc performed as a DJ at small events and, together with a friend, had his own party series called “Levitation”. He did not however play his early productions live at stage nor performed as Captain Unplugged before 2000. This album contains tracks which were never made available before. More unpublished material by Marc and his side-project “Kware” are expected from Unreleased Goa Records in the future.
