about

Unreleased Goa Records proudly celebrates the return of Masada, a legendary Goa Trance project from Sweden, who have been silent for nearly two decades. Two aficionados of music and computers, Torsten Edwinson and Mathias Westin became friends at the University of Gäle during their student years. They soon decided to start producing music together and officially formed their duo in May 1999. Torsten had started his musical journey in the early 1980’s; an admirer of Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, and Depeche Mode, he first produced electro, as well as italo-disco for a band, before switching to reggae, funk, and soul in the early 90’s. On the other hand, Mathias was very fond of Oasis, Blur and other bands of the UK indie scene; his compositions spanned a variety of genres but were not really known outside his home.

At the end of the 90’s, both Torsten and Mathias were increasingly attracted to famous Goa Trance acts from Israel, and were looking for a name that reflected that connection. They chose the word "Masada", which refers to one of Israel’s most popular tourist attractions and is also the title of an Alpha Blondy album that Torsten had in his collection. An interesting fact is that the duo never worked together on their tracks: each track was written and produced by one member only, and all tracks by either one of them were released under the name Masada.

In the beginning, Torsten and Mathias tried a lot to sound like Astral Projection, their number one influence, as their energetic style and synth lines was very compelling to them. The Masada style progressively evolved as they listened to the masterpieces of Man With No Name, Blue Planet Corporation, Prana, and later of Atmos and Son Kite. The ten tracks featured in the Hipsters & Flipsters album reflect this change. They were produced by Torsten between 1998 and 2001, production-wise the most intense and prolific period for the project. Torsten worked on the tracks using a simple setup consisting of a Roland MC-505 groove box and a Yamaha AN1X.

Some of these tracks were available, only in low quality, on the defunct MP3.com and count among the biggest successes of this platform as they regularly topped the Trance charts. The duo also performed them live at several Swedish events such as "Area 51", "Moonflower 4", "Earthdome Vampires", but never outside their country. They are now released, for the first time, in full audio quality. More unpublished material by Masada is expected from Unreleased Goa Records in the future.
