about

Unreleased Goa Records proudly celebrates its 40th release with "Paradoxal Renaissance", a marvellous Goa Trance album by mysterious Spanish project Eryon. Hugo started making music in 1995, inspired by the amazing instrumental songs of The Alan Parsons Project, and the works of legendary acts Astral Projection, Man With No Name, Chi-a.d., and Blue Planet Corporation. He was particularly interested in the tracker scene and the music produced by Goa Trance specialists such as Heatseeker or Psylent Buddhi. The fact that everything was ‘open source’ there allowed him to research first-hand how every note and effect were developed. Hugo progressively shaped his own style of music with the intent to urge listeners create layers, landscapes and stories in their own minds, triggering their imagination. On the other hand, due to the limitations of tracker music, he was focused on creating memorable melodies with a certain sense of complexity, so as to create a connection with the listeners and provide positive feelings.

After five years of learning and experimenting, Hugo completed his first ever Goa Trance track called "Numinor" in 2000. This was followed by several other pieces that he published under the project name "Eryon" (a typical male name in some cultures, and also an extinct genus of crustaceans from the Late Jurassic period) on various popular free music-sharing platforms such as Vitaminic, MP3.com and Trax In Space. The first six tracks featured on this album were produced during that prolific period, initially with the use of Fast Tracker 2 and employing Modplug Tracker to complete them. Each track portrays Hugo’s explorations in the Psychedelic Trance spectre:

"Mare Obscurum" (2001), a slightly dark Goa track with only a few changes, was made to resemble a boat trip on high seas under a grey sky; "Ecstatica" (2001), faster and darker, refers to Andrew Spencer’s videogame, which stood out at its time, as well as the concept of ecstasy; "Uranus Conquest" (2001) is typical 90’s psychedelic space-theme-based music; "Dharamsala" (2001), an Indian-inspired track with many Astral Projection influences, was originally released by Vaso Music in 2002 and appears here, for the first time ever, in its full unedited version; "Aurum" (2002) is an attempt to experiment with psychedelic sounds introduced by MFG; and "Überich" (2002) represents Hugo’s transition to Progressive Psy-trance, following the 'new' Minimal style of SBK and XV Kilist. The artist spent considerable time re-editing and reworking each track for this album, using a better DAW and applying standard sound effects.

The last three tracks, produced in 2016, after a 7-year hiatus from 2005 to 2012, resume Hugo’s interest in Progressive Psychedelic Trance and Ambient music. With "Mitra" and "Evanescent Encounter", he wanted to develop more complex sounds and structures, by blending oldschool and 'new-school' techniques: the former is another videogame-inspired track, whereas the latter is based on the last three episodes of the anime series "Samurai Champloo" and pays homage to the melodic lines used by Astral Projection. "Neo Itálica" is both a tribute to the timeless Blue Planet Corporation’s ambient track "Roma" and an interpretation of a scene of "Ghost In The Shell: Innocence" with Kenji Kawai’s music.

Hugo chose the title "Paradoxal Renaissance" for his album as it carries a deep meaning to him in terms of ascending from a bad situation. There are so many tracks here that he thought would remain forgotten forever, but reality has showed him the opposite. During these last years, Hugo went through a personal fall and rebirth. In both cases, he thought there was no way up, but it seems God had other plans for him. That is the paradox.
