about

Unreleased Goa Records is very proud to shed light on kentpo, a mysterious French project of the 90’s, and his outstanding "Artificial Vision" EP. Erick Soulages discovered the Techno movement in the early 90’s. A fan of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Art of Noise, he started to produce music in 1993. Two years later, after being introduced to Goa Trance by a friend who owned a copy of the "Order Odonata" compilation, he began to experiment with the genre. With occasional help from Stephan Genta (aka DigitXpr), a guitarist/drummer friend he met during his military service in 1994, he composed several Goa Trance tracks between 1995 and 2005, using a Novation bassline, Waldorf Pulse, EPS Ensoniq, Quasimidi Raven, Pro52, SH 101, Rebirth, Cubase SX.

During a trip to Greece in 1997, Erick came across the word "κέντρο" ("kentro") numerous times. As he was not familiar with the Greek alphabet, he misread it as "kentpo". He also thought it meant "factory", which fitted nicely with his perception of his work. Although he later found out the word's actual pronunciation and true meaning ("center"), he liked the sound of “kentpo” and used it for his project. The driving force behind kentpo has always been the music’s ability to pass on Erick's personal views regarding factory-shaped state capitalism. The center of Erick's worldview includes the belief that contemporary society is an artificial, consumerist structure, that renounces the real world surrounding us. This structure provides a feeling of overall protection, a shield of sorts, against anything that could happen to us. The title of this EP, "Artificial Vision", reflects also today's dematerialized approach regarding music, be it production, collaboration between artists, distribution, or any other aspect.

Melody is the essence of the four Goa Trance tracks featured on this EP. The artist was primarily influenced by the sound of the first Dragonfly compilations and pioneers such as Astral Projection and Hallucinogen, before developing his personal style. These tracks were only played live during the French Music Day at the Domain of Lassy in Luzarches in 2002, and in secret at several private parties. They are now available to all for the first time in full quality. The EP also includes a nice techno rebuild of the track "Ohio" by DigitXpr, exclusively available on Bandcamp.
